Here is how this works in practice. We connect shoots with directors of photography who own the visual language of a film through lighting, lens choice, camera movement and composition across shoots in Romania. Our DPs work with closely with the director to set up the look of each scene, lead the camera and lighting departments, and bring reels spanning features, episodic television, commercials and documentary. We supply cinematographers fluent in the today's digital cinema systems. This includes ARRI, RED and Sony Venice, and skilled in both controlled studio work at Buftea and Castel Film and demanding location shoots.

Here is the short of it. Because Romania's crew base is deep, skilled and competitively priced, a DP here can realise ambitious lighting and camera work at budgets unworkable in Western Europe, and qualifying camera and lighting spend counts toward the CNC cash rebates of up to 45 per cent on eligible expenditure. We brief each DP on the project's references and tone. We set up the camera ops, focus pullers and grip and electric teams the cinematographer needs to deliver.

Here is the breakdown. Romania has a distinguished cinematographic culture, and our directors of photography are part of it. The worldwide celebrated Romanian New Wave, with Cristian Mungiu's Palme d'Or winner '4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days' and Cristi Puiu's 'The Death of Mr Lazarescu', set up a worldwide respected school of naturalistic, precise camerawork that resists gloss in favour of truth. That custom is taught at UNATC in Bucharest and showcased at the Transilvania International Film Festival in Cluj-Napoca.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. The country also gives DPs an extraordinary visual canvas: the Gothic silhouettes of Bran and Corvin castles, the medieval towns of Sibiu, Brasov and Sighisoara, the old-growth Carpathian forests, the painted monasteries of Bukovina and the monumental build style of Bucharest. The temperate four-season climate, with reliably snowy winters, gives cinematographers genuine seasonal light to work with. Global shoots from 'Cold Mountain' to 'Wednesday' have drawn on this combination of trained talent and visual depth.
